The Pulvertaft Hand Centre has set up an annual bursary of £500 in honour of Aida Khalifeh (21.4.68 – 2.2.02). Aida Khalifeh, having gained a medical degree in her home country of Syria, came to the UK in 1996 with her husband, Emad Shahin, who was undertaking further training in hand surgery. Aida spent time with the hand therapists in Derby in order to learn the important skills of hand therapy so that she could assist Emad and his patients on their return to Syria. Sadly, Aida died at the City Hospital in Nottingham after a courageous fight against leukaemia.
The Hand Centre in Derby would therefore like to offer a bursary of £500 to a hand therapist, who feels that they would benefit from visiting a specialist centre in a country other than their own. We would be particularly keen to help those countries with no funds to support staff. Preference would be given to overseas candidates who wished to visit the UK, although UK therapists wishing to visit another centre would not be excluded. The bursary would be intended to help towards the cost of travel, accommodation or subsistence.
Applicants would need to provide documentary evidence that a visit has been arranged. Priority will be given to those applications which:
- Clearly state the objective of the proposed visit
- Explain the choice of centre
Applicants will be expected to submit a written report of their visit, describing the benefit gained, within one month of their return.
Applicants will be requested to provide the names and addresses of 2 people who are willing to act as referees and who would be able to comment on the applicant’s work as a hand therapist.

Applications should be received no later than 30 September. Applicants will be informed of the decision by letter within 6 weeks of the application deadline. It would be expected that the visit would be made within 6 months of the bursary being awarded.
