Why choose the Therapy team at the Pulvertaft Hand Unit?

The Pulvertaft Hand Unit was opened by Her Majesty the Queen in 1992 and since then has moved to a large modern department in the Kings Treatment Centre, Royal Derby Hospital.  Over this time the Pulvertaft Hand Unit has gained the status of a Regional Hand Unit for the Midlands, although we are recognised and accept referrals nationally and internationally.

The Pulvertaft Hand Therapy Team consists of 24 Qualified Therapists, 3 Therapy Assistants and 2 Therapy Administrators, all of which are highly experienced and dynamic that pride themselves on providing a quality service and ensuring you have the optimum treatment experience.

Two of our Qualified Therapists have gone on to achieve the highly prestigious qualification of a Certified Hand Therapist and MSc in Hand Therapy.  The Pulvertaft Hand Unit also consists of a Research Department where 3 of our Therapists where they are actively involved in current research projects.

We regularly manage a high volume caseload of a wide range of highly complex and routine upper limb and hand patients of all ages with diverse presentations, multiple pathologies and conditions. We provide rehabilitation for both acute and chronic conditions caused by trauma, surgery or disease including:

We are well versed in broad range of specialist Hand Therapy assessments, treatments and modalities to restore optimal level of function and return patients to their activities of daily living. We perform advanced therapeutic assessment to provide a diagnosis and we have excelled in delivering and adapting effective individualised treatment programs through recommending a wide range of therapeutic media.

Our Hand Therapy Team is passionate about educating others, sharing of good evidence based practice and demonstrating innovative therapy approaches.  We regularly attend, organise and lecture on a variety of in service and external courses – please see website for details on current courses, as well as actively involved in the teaching of final year medical students via means of the clinical educator role.

All of your hand treatment will be within the Pulvertaft Hand Unit, this enables the therapists to work extremely close with the hand Consultants and the rest of the multidisciplinary team ensuring you as a patient receive the best care and high quality service. Our Hand Therapy team covers the following services:

  • Inpatient – Ward Round, Intensive inpatient therapy
  • Outpatient – 1:1, clinics, group work
  • Satellite Clinics via means of our Extended Scope Practitioners

We also are aiming to work more generically and have dual competences in Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy to provide you a seamless and effective service by only having to see one therapist.
